this controversy in washington, as well as hurricane sandy. there was some pretty big-waits on the economy, and yet is still continued -- weight on the economy, and yet it still continued dto churto churn ahea. every month, we have traded on average 153,000 jobs. -- created on average 153,000 jobs. host: in a country with well over 3 million americans, they're more than 12,000,002 are currently out of work. almost 5 million long-term unemployed. the discouraged worker, about 1.1 million. guest: it is good that the economy kept churning along, but it is bad the we have such a lousy economy. we believe to create something like 350,000 -- we need to create something like 350,000 jobs to get unemployment down to 6%. we're falling short every single month. it is a recovery. we were in such a deep hole that it has been really difficult to dig out of this whole. -- hole. if you're looking and reasons for optimism, you can look at this and say, good. if you're one of those 12 million people who does not have a job, this is a disappointing report because it is not stronger. it is not enough to start to job

that the president wants to move fast on the issue of gun control coming out of the sandy hook shooting. vice president biden's task force is likely to make recommendations before the inaugural and he told boston's mayor tom menino that it would be passed by the end of january. is that optimism on his part justified, and are you open to the kind of reforms the president has already talked about like a limit on high-capacity gun magazines and background checks to buyers at gun shows? >> well, first we need to concentrate on joe biden's group and what are they going to recommend? and after they do that, we'll decide what, if anything, is appropriate to do in this area, but the biggest problem we have at the moment is spending and debt. that's going to dominate the congress between now and the end of march. none of these issues, i think, will have the kind of priority that spending and debt are going to have over the next two or three months. >> so you're not going to address this until after you address these three deadlines we talked about at the top of the program? >> yeah, the single biggest

we were supposed to vote to provide the victims of hurricane sandy relief, they are all suffering, millions of folks, a bipartisan bill passed in the senate with over 60 votes. republicans and democrats, to provide the $60 billion in relief that governor comeau and christie said we need. republicans would not allow the bill to come to a vote. and today we are watching the victims in those four states of new york, new jersey, pennsylvania, and i forgot the fourth state, i apologize, connecticut, suffer as a result of this. >> and why is there no outrage that politicians as usual use a real disaster to lard up a bill with a bunch of special interest gimmes that have nothing to do with the victims of sandy? why isn't there any outrage about that? >> this is the problem. clearly this will distinguish the two parties. that bill, 64% of it did not spend out in the next two years. 31% of it had nothing, nothing, zero to do. the train came through and the boys said, let's throw the pork on the train. it came out of the senate as exactly why the country is now sick. this was not emergency

out in the delay over hurricane sandy relief funding. take a look at how the fiscal cliff vote broke down by region. the fiscal cliff vote. john writes about it in "the new republic." i love these numbers. all in all, 85 republicans voted for the senate resolution and 151 voted against it. the opposition was centered in the old south. southern republicans opposed the measure by 83 to 10. 83 to 10 down south. the delegations from alabama, mississippi, georgia, virginia, tennessee, and south carolina were unanimously opposed. in the east, the northeast, house republicans were 24 to 1 in favor, with new york and pennsylvania unanimous. well, the danger for the gop is it's becoming a religious sectional ultraconservative party great at winning and holding gerrymandered seats but too willing to sacrifice entire regions of the country. former congressman chris shays is a republican from connecticut, and howard fineman is editorial director of "the huffington post" as well as an msnbc political analyst and our pal and my pal. look, chris shays, it's great to have you on because you have alw

and the events in sandy hook was overwhelming. it was a slaughter of the innocence. the crucial turning point of what ought to be a dialogue in three areas and the assault weapons and the high capacity magazine clips should be what we will do about mental health care services for people in this nation. i applaud the vice president and the commission. it appears to be far reaching in scope and my hope is what they will recommend is that we do ban assault weapons and the high capacity clips and we take a look at the mental health services in our schools and professionals and providing greater access to mental health services. to take a look at the loopholes and also we ought to begin. i don't have specifics, but we ought to begin about what are the culturings that glorifies violence. >> he said it doesn't have to be all or nothing and we would rather do something than nothing. we have advocates who point to the same issues with violence and movies and the television industry and the video games. all of those are warranted of our attention and doesn't need to be all or nothing. that seems to be
